Warfare 1917 is a tactical side-scrolling strategy game set in the muddy trenches of World War I. Taking command of British or German forces on the Western Front, you manage recruitment timers, order infantry squads into fortified positions, and call down timed artillery barrages across contested ground. Every skirmish is a tense battle of attrition where ground control and casualty rates dictate the outcome.

Unlike fast reflex titles on Snow Runner, Warfare 1917 rewards patience, positioning, and methodical resource management. Victory rarely comes from sending solitary units forward into open machine gun fire. Instead, you must carefully assemble balanced waves of riflemen, assault squads, snipers, and officers to suppress opposing fire and push through no man's land.

A battle ends in one of two ways: pushing infantry into the final enemy trench on the far side of the map, or draining the opposing army's morale meter to zero through steady casualties and sustained territorial pressure. Between missions, the campaign awards upgrade points to enhance squad survivability, weapon damage, and artillery cooldowns.

How to play

The game runs entirely through mouse controls. Select unit cards along the bottom command bar to deploy reinforcements as recruitment cooldowns reset. Once a squad occupies a trench, click on the unit or trench to order them to hold fire, brace for cover, or advance forward to the next open position.

Use the support bar at the top of the screen to target artillery strikes, smoke screens, and mortar rounds directly onto fortified enemy trenches. Time these explosive barrages just before ordering your assault troops over the top to clear lingering defenders.

Tactical advice for the front line

• Establish trench fire superiority: Station machine gunners and snipers in your forward-most trench before attempting a push. Their suppressive fire prevents opposing units from advancing across no man's land unpunished.
• Lead with artillery barrages: Direct artillery strikes onto packed enemy trenches right before your assault infantry charge. Eliminating defenders or softening their cover ensures your squads cross open ground with minimal casualties.
• Deploy officers for morale boosts: Officers rally nearby troops, boosting combat efficiency and shielding your army from devastating morale loss when taking incoming fire.
• Invest in core campaign upgrades: Spend early mission upgrade points on squad durability, recruitment speed, and artillery accuracy rather than spreading points too thin across situational perks.
